The Apollo program began with the launch of Apollo 1 on January 27, 1967. The Apollo program then continued with a series of manned and unmanned test flights, leading up to the historic Apollo 11 mission in 1969. On July 16 of that year, the Apollo 11 spacecraft, consisting of the command module Columbia and the lunar module Eagle, was launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission was commanded by Neil Armstrong, with Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins serving as the lunar module pilot and the command module pilot, respectively.

On July 20, 1969, Armstrong and Aldrin landed the lunar module Eagle on the surface of the moon, while Collins orbited above. Armstrong famously stepped onto the surface and declared \”That\’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.\” Aldrin also landed on the surface, and the two spent a total of 21 hours, 36 minutes on the lunar surface. They collected samples, conducted experiments, and took photographs before returning to the lunar module and blasting off the surface to rendezvous with Collins in the command module.

After the successful completion of the Apollo 11 mission, NASA conducted five more manned missions to the Moon as part of the Apollo program. The last of these, Apollo 17, was launched on December 7, 1972, and returned to Earth on December 19 of that year. The Apollo program was a major achievement for NASA and a defining moment in human history. In recent years, NASA has announced plans to go back to the moon with the Artemis program with the goal to land the first woman and next man on the lunar south pole by 2024.

• यह NASA(National Aeronautics and Space Administration) में कार्यरत थे।
• यह NASA से सन 1971 में Retired हुए थे उसके बाद कई college में as a professor की तरह कार्य भी किया था। 
• Neil Armstrong को कई सारे मेडलों से सम्मानित भी किया गया था।
• Mission सफल होने के बाद मौजूदा राष्ट्रपति निक्सन ने presidential  medal of freedom से सम्मानित किया था।
• इसके बाद सन 1978 में Jimi corter ने congressional space medal of honor से सम्मानित किया था।
• 25 अगस्त 2012, 82 वर्ष की उम्र में इनकी मृत्यु हो गई थी।
• नील आर्मस्ट्रांग जिस यान से चन्द्रमा पर गए थे वह उसके कमांडर थे।
